Green Dining District Initiatives 2019 – 2021

Since its inception in January 2019, fourteen restaurants in downtown Carson City have taken the initiative to make their operations more friendly to the planet by analyzing their waste streams and making changes to their preparation and disposal practices that prevented twenty-five tons of waste from going to the landfill in 2019. The Green Dining District, led by greenUP!, has led two Plastic Free July campaigns, nudging members of the public to be conscious of all the single use plastics that are so normal and so banal in day-to-day life. Plastic Free July campaigns suggest simple habit changes like bringing your own metal straws or cutlery and forgoing a plastic bag when not needed. greenUP! also partnered with restaurants to donate prepared food and canned goods to local charitable organization FISH to feed the food insecure and to divert usable surpluses away from the trash.

greenUP! worked together with Nevada Day organizers and other organizations to make Nevada Day a more sustainable event. Partnering restaurants sold reusable stainless-steel cups to reduce the huge amount of waste generated from beverages consumed along the parade route.
