With the closure of nonessential business and other proactive COVID19 measures, businesses have had to come up with creative ways to stay afloat. Many restaurants have shifted their focus from in-house dining to more takeout options. While these to-go programs allow customers to enjoy local foods from the comfort and safety of their own home, the packaging waste of all these take away meals is starting to add up.
greenUP! and members of the Carson City Green Dining District plan to offset packaging waste: customers can skip the plastic utensils and opt to bring home reusable bamboo utensils instead. Reusable bamboo utensil kits donated by the the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection, will be distributed to Green Dining restaurants by greenUP! These will be available to 120 customers, on a limited basis, who support Green Dining restaurants. Customers can visit a participating restaurant, scan a QR code on their phone, and play a quick learning game to learn about plastic pollution. The 5 question game will quiz customers on little known plastic facts and when customers show their score to the GDD restaurant, they are eligible to receive a bamboo utensil kit that can be used again and again with their favorite to-go meals.
Participating restaurants include Cucina Lupo, Gather, Scoups Ice Cream and Soup Bar, So Juicy, Squeeze In, and The Union. Get your utensils while supplies last.
Restaurants have been hit hard by COVID-19 and there’s a lot that the public can do to support them. They can order curb side pickup, they can purchase gift cards and they can plan to frequent the restaurants when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. This can be done while still practicing environmental practices such as recycling and using your own utensils while dining to reduce waste. See video greenUP! created to support our restaurants:
